The Vanished Fragrance 浮世绝香 – 无非由 Wu Fei You (BE)

She was twenty years old but unmarried. It was rumored that she was extremely ugly, so no one dares to marry her. Yet there was a casanova who was attracted to her.

She was not exceptionally beautiful, only possessed a clever and alert mind which can see through the ways of the world and its people.

He was the guardian of the frontier, rumored to be indifferent, ruthless, cruel and unfeeling. He has many beautiful concubines but his heart was not moved by any of them.

He has a stunning appearance and supreme power. There were too many complicated entanglements and calculated conspiracy, except the absence of warmth and sincerity.

It was merely a bet out of boredom. He schemed his attack strategy to capture her heart, believing no woman in the world will not be infatuated with him, flocked to him and ingratiated themselves with him.

She was the only one who treated him as transparent even after losing her virginity and had her heart broken. She was still able to live calmly and comfortably, extremely tough.

He cannot allow that and must destroy her until she would rather die than live!

Suspicion and violent temperament clouded his heart, until completely lost. In the end, who will suffer heartbreak and lose the soul?!

  • This is the saddest ancient novel I've ever read, sob sob.....I don't read BE novel but I got duped into listening to part 1 of the radio drama because of the many clicks :( Then I started to read & have bad premonition so I checked the spoiler. Even knowing it is BE, I still continued to read the novel until the end :( There is just too much angst so u've been warned. I guess bcos of its depressing ending, it has left a deep impression on me & traumatize me :( Actually you can say it has an open ending but the intention of the author is BE. But she bowed to the pressure from the readers and wrote an epilogue which has a vague ending.

The writing and plot are actually not too bad. But there are some boring moments here & there as the novel's focus on the OTP is quite minimal. We've the palace scheming as well as martial arts world involvement. However the plot is diff from the rebirth and revenge novels which are very popular recently. This is bcos this novel is old, written 7 yrs ago. The writing is a bit poetic so no google translate lol. The female lead is likable. She is neither weak nor strong so rather balance. The male lead appears cold & cruel but at the end of the novel, I did shed a tear for him. He just doesn't know how to express his love and is afraid to show his love until it is too late. He is definitely better than the male lead in FWSC's Eastern Palace who I wanted to throw eggs at.

The opening was quite shocking to me having the male lead killing all his dad's wives after he passed away. Even though he has his reason for doing so, it is still cruel. The female lead is weak but in health only. Her dad kept her at home bcos the doctor said she won't live past 20 yo if she is exposed to love/man lol. But she went out with her younger sis, got found out & was banished to the nunnery to copy Buddhist transcript. This is where she met the male lead.

He & his fren saw her & made a bet that he won't be able to bed her. The male lead arrogantly said as long as she is a woman, he'll not fail bcos woman is weak at love. Thus he orchestrated their 1st meeting in rescuing her & befriending her. He also helped her to understand the Buddhist scripture. He thought that she'll easily succumb but she didn't. Anyhow she seemed to start to like him. The girl is rather sheltered, gentle & innocent so when he kind of got a chance to bed her, he let her go.

Ultimately of course he bedded her. When she found out the sweet nothing he whispered to her were all lies just to bed her, she felt so dejected & my heart ached for her :( But she acted quite dignified which surprised him. Then she vomited blood & was really sick, poor girl. Later, when they met again at the Lantern Festival, she acted like she didn't know him & ignored him to his annoyance lol. To punish her, he asked for her hand in marriage. But she told her dad to reject his proposal heehee...

Okay, I'll stop here as I don't want to give too many spoilers :P If anyone dares to read it and wants to discuss the novel especially the ending with me, do leave me a comment.

  • It doesn't seem like I'll be able to read this so yes, I'd like to know everything, lol. Thank you for the lovely details^^

  • 16 years? Like Xiaolongnu....*sigh*...And their daughter is so cute hummm let me correct not just simply cute but cute little witch...like father, like daughter..That's my cup of tea..not always but i like that kind of plot...At first the male lead is lunatic but in the end who greatly suffer and live with full of regrets is him...har har har(Evil laugh)

  • @peanuts! Don't stop there! You were doing so well in narrating the story. Please continue until the end. I am happy to just read your summary. XD

  • Peanuts! You are magnificent for telling us what is going on. I rather like the female lead from what you are saying about her. I'm emotionally invested now. What's the ending? Thank you!

  • Please continue peanuts! What are spoilers if not to assess if a BE novel is worth reading? Not to mention you are narrating so well too...

  • Hey I am asking you to read the book, not my spoiler :P I didn't feel much when I read the spoilers but I felt the emotion & angst acutely when I read the novel. Honestly, my summary/spoilers can't do justice to this novel. But due to popular demand, here it is:
In the end, she had no choice but to marry him for her father's sake as he was arrested. Beside marrying her as a concubine, he was also marrying 2 other girls just to spite her. Outwardly she may appear that she didn't care, but inwardly her heart was shattered. She kept on reminding herself he is not worth it. During a banquet, she felt sick but the male lead was indifferent. Even his friend noticed she was unwell. Grrrgh, I felt like slapping him here lol. It turned out that she was pregnant.

Thereafter his attitude changed for the better. As a reader, we can see that he did love her as he allowed her to give birth to his only child. Normally he will make his concubines drink something akin to the pill to prevent them from getting pregnant. Anyway a leopard can't change its spot as he still wanted to make use of her to further his interest, to her utter disappointment. The novel is a lot more complicated than my summary but I don't have the energy to dwell into his past & her family with plenty of side characters.

Finally he lost her in a bet. Initially he lost her to his friend but he was not worried bcos the friend was gay. But in turn, his friend lost her to another guy. To his surprise, she agreed to leave with this guy, He was shocked & dejected that she was willing to leave with another man. He tried to wriggle out of it by asking her to stay until she has given birth. He planned to give the baby to that guy or promote her to be the queen to prevent her fr leaving later.

But she has lost all hope & was adamant on leaving. He brought up her agreement to love only him and will not leave him unless he no longer wanted her. She replied since he put her as his wager, it means he no longer wanted her. Although he won't let her leave, the guy who won her came & rescued her.

The twist of the story is that the guy who won her was actually her long-lost blood brother. She agreed to leave with her bro bcos she finally knew he truly loves her. Thus she didn't want him to see her dying & wanted to give birth to a baby to keep him coy. The ending didn't explicitly state she died but it is understood. Then he found out abt her illness & bitterly regretted his action. If she didn't meet him, he didn't seduce her & she didn't get pregnant, she would not need to die.

In the epilogue, his daughter came to look for him and told him that the mum wrote 16 letters to him. The father & daughter had some quality time together until her 16th birthday. It is something like ROCH but with a twist & so much sadder. The last letter she wrote, told him to meet her at the cliff where they pledged their love to each other if she was still alive. He went there with their daughter but of course she was not there. Then he told his daughter to leave first as he wanted to hang around & will go back to look for her later.

Then he jumped & his daughter cried that he had lied to her. It is not really clear but I interpret it as he has committed suicide to join her? You can harbor the hope that he'll meet her under the cliff like Yang Guo meeting his XLN :P As I've mentioned b4 the author's intention is BE & the epilogue was written to satisfy the readers. One review mentioned that you can consider it HE bcos both of them died :( In conclusion, I feel that this male lead redeemed himself in the end, not like that male lead in FWSC's Eastern Palace who continued to live in the epilogue.
I read this novel at lightning speed so pls excuse any error or omission.

  • When he stand at the cliff he heard the flowing of water or something like that...And then he decided to jump...I think whether HE or BE that's depand on reader choice...b'coz of special ep...But he's not my fav ones and not even close...In my opinion ,he's Abusive ,demanding...I mean there is also books like poweful dominant male lead with great ambitious ,strong and cruel to enemies but when they across love they know what they want and not hesitate to show love or something similar affection to their love one...But 'this one ' even the 100 chapters he still full of ego or doubt or pride or i don't know that maybe i read with marathon speed or maybe i decided not to like...Anyway that's just my opinion...

  • Firstly, he is not my fav. Among the baddies I've read, he can be considered a better one. I've read a few novels with bad male leads bcos I m on a baddie binge lol. Suddenly I feel tired of all the goody male leads :P

He has some serious character flaws as well as history so it is fitting that he can't show love. I'll feel very fake/forced if he suddenly did something out of character to show deep affection. The tragedy of this novel is his inability to express his love, his distrust & pride. Actually he craved for love & was full of love but all was bottled inside. He did cry in the last chapter but all 2 late.

Anyway, you are entitled to your own opinion so we don't need to agree on anything.
