Star-Drift / Moon / He and Moon Are Neighbours 他与月光为邻 by Ding Mo (HE)

The first meeting, she insisted on giving him a pastry. Even though he hated sweets most, he put effort in to finish it;

The second time, because she was scared she reached out and hugged him. His complexion slightly red: “Young lady, please first let go.”

The third time, she accidentally kissed him. He looked like he had just seen a ghost, she just said: “Only an accident, please don’t mind or think about it too much.”

Being a well-raised and educated person, an outstanding officer who was both mentally and physically healthy, Ying Han Shi was unable to not think about his first kiss.

After careful consideration, he decided……to take responsibility for her.

——as he stood with both hands behind his back under the star-filled sky, he watched me tenderly

I saw stars become flowing light, falling behind him.

Star-Drift, They reverently referred to him as “Star-Drift”.

In my life, forever bright, and never falling Star-Drift.

  • Note: The first Star-Drift is italicized because it was actually written in English.

The Chinese title directly translated is something like “He and the Moonlight as neighbors”. For once her title semi make sense because this is a scifi novel that takes place in the future. At least most of the action happens on earth though (at least the parts I read). According to Ding Mo’s tags for this novel, it is pretty carefree. Though from her Weibo posts, seems like the second male lead may be really good. Currently she is working on revising the online version for publication.

Has anyone finished this? I went into this not knowing anything and for some reason did not know this was a scifi…read at least the first 20 ish chaps but got bored along the way. For some reason it just didn’t grab me from the beginning like her other novels. However, it seems to be popular and I was wondering if anyone can give me a reason to finish this. More specifically, was it good? And if so, what about it did you like?

  • Newbie to this site but not a newbie to Chinese novels. :)

    May be spoilers ahead~

@jollymerry: Hello! :) This novel is is definitely not as memorable as her other sci-fi ones as the pacing is very slow, but it is a nice build up for what will come towards the end. Much of the excitement happens in the later half of the story with a few unexpected twists and no, not all of the story takes place on the earth that we know. ;) It's just like her other sci-fi novels, just that it's not as adventure-filled. I would say it's a good novel to read to pass time. Ding Mo could have done better with this one, to be honest, like get rid a few of the chapters at the beginning or right around where you left off. But once you get through that part, it starts to get better and better imo.

What made me really like the novel is the male lead Ying Han Shi. He has become one of my favorite Ding Mo leads. The other Ding Mo men tend to be the "cold exterior" types. YHS isn't a bubbly sunshine boy of any sort, but he is definitely warmer than other DM leading males. He is unintentionally adorable. I call him the 小媳婦 type of guy (especially when he is made fun of because he blushes a lot but he isn't like that all the time with her) though he has also inherited other DM leading males' trait of being cool, confident and protective.

The interactions between the leads are just too cute. It would seem that Xie Jin Zhi is the one who wears the pants in the relationship but Ying Han Shi just turns that around without using any force--unless you count being extremely adorable, even if it's unintentional, as a soft force. ;)

Sorry, rambled too much here! I don't think I convinced you enough though.

  • @tammy haha don't say that! what you said sounds really good!! Now I'm tempted to read this book :( You sound like you read quite a fair bit of Ding Mo's sci-fi novels though! Do you have any to recommend for starters? Are there any technical terms that only regular sci-fi readers would understand? :/

  • @dramasbooksandtea Hello! I’m glad my description didn’t completely fail. Hehe.

Interestingly, sci-fi is my least favorite genre to read but I’ve read 梟寵 and 獨家佔有 from Ding Mo. You don’t really need to know sci-terms as a prerequisite. The female leads usually also have limited knowledge what outer space is like anyway, so the supporting characters are there to explain the relationships and places to them. So no worries, you will learn along with the female leads. :)

The only thing about those two novels is that the relationships are 重口味. Think somewhere along the lines of Sealed with a Kiss but with less resentment from the female lead. The women aren’t Mary Sues either. They are all very capable just like her other female leads, just that they were unfortunate at the time the 重口味 event happened. There's only one of those episodes in each novel and the rest of it is typical DM style with the male lead spoiling the girl.

Luckily Star-Drift doesn’t follow the same pattern with how the relationships start. So I guess if you aren’t a 重口味 reader then I would recommend to go with Star-Drift. It is a lighter novel compared to the other two.

  • @tammy thanks for your explanation! Guess I stopped just before it got interesting or something. Hmmm, her other scifi may not be my type to read, but I may pick Star-Drift up again after I catch up on some new English novels--the new cover is so pretty! Can't wait for her upcoming novel about Lin Gege, teasers are so cruel :P

  • @jollymerry You're welcome! I hope the cover for the traditional Chinese version will be just as pretty. Lin Gege is one of my favorite supporting characters so I'm glad he's finally getting a story of his own. I'm going to avoid looking at the teasers for now and focus on catching up with Memory Lost instead. Hehe.

  • @tammy Hello! I was wondering how you find 梟寵 in general? I was thinking of borrowing it from my local library but I'm not very good at reading Chinese words, (Opps, hahaha) By any chance, do you know if there is any English synopsis that is available? Hehehehe.

  • @BananaRaindrops Hello! I liked it in general, though my memory of the second half of the story is quite fuzzy at this moment. The female lead does not stand out to me as much as the others, but the male lead certainly does. He is quite rigid and perhaps a lot more colder than the other DM leading males. In the story he is called Commander by his subordinates and his personality reflects that as well. I’m not going to lie, sometimes I forget what his name is and I almost always refer to him by Commander. Hehe. I don’t recall ever seeing a synopsis in English so I am providing my own.

Under the stream of streetlights, the man’s face is colder than the night sky.
The man looks at her stained fingers on his pants.“I never help people.”
A few military officers approach, ready to take her away. She has lost all energy to struggle and falls into their arms.
Yet at this time, he speaks in his cold voice. “I only do exchanges for profit. What are you going to use to exchange for your life?”

In brief, the leading lady wakes up in an unfamiliar world and runs into some trouble. The part above is when he saves her and she becomes somewhat of a pet to him until she learns how to stand on her own two feet. IIRC she joins a team of cadets of some sort where she learns to operate a spaceship (or some sci-fi outer space vehicle iirc) and becomes a top student. She is a hard worker and when she finally is able to stand on her own two feet, she becomes somewhat fearless and loves to take on challenges. Over time, he realizes that he does a lot of things for her without any profits or compensation like he originally said he would, prompting him to take their relationship further. In addition to all of this happening, we find out that he is not the person he says he is so that’s one twist for readers . There are other side characters in the story, including the insect race (Zergs?) and robots. There are war battles scenes involved too.

  • @tammy Omg! THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I'm gonna add it to my book reading list (which is extremely long, opps) Can't thank you enough tammy!!! Hehehehe! <3
