An Unrivalled World (Rule the World) 独步天下 by 李歆 Li Xin (BE)

4775326

An orphaned female photographer came from far away, and on a grave expedition, she accidentally travelled back in time four hundred years and entered into the time period of Nurhaci. Her soul entered the body of the most beautiful Jurchen woman — Dong’ge.

Recorded in history: “Dong’ge, full name Yehenala Buxiyemala, died at age thirty four…”

In folklore, Dong’ge was born under then prophecy “will cause the world to prosper, will cause the world to perish.” From when she was ten years old, Nurhaci issued an order of continuous war, and with the legendary past of “one woman destroying four kingdoms,” she became one of the “Seven Regrets” in Nurhaci’s life.

Atsu had this book in draft form so I didn’t bother to post it. How is the audio book? Tell us if the book is worth a listen. Btw I left you a msg on your blog abt your meeting with HXM. Haha, you must be excited:)

This books is on one of those top 100 booklists. Started this today and seems interesting enough. I’ve never been a fan of Nurhaci (I can only seem to imagine Steve Ma as Nurhaci and I don’t find him good looking at all), but his sons seem likable so far.

Yah, this book is rated quite highly but I don’t really agree with some of the books ranking on that list. Nurhaci is which Manchu King? The 1st one? I sort of know the story of all the Manchu kings but cannot remember their names except Kang Xi & Yong Zheng:(

The audiobook is decent, but the reader’s voice is a bit older sounding than Si Lu Min Yin and A’Shou.

Nurhaci was never technically emperor, but like Hong Taiji, he was posthumously declared emperor after the Shunzhi Emperor conquered Ming. He was the first to unite the Jurchens and began to conquer Ming China though.

So, the order is Nurhaci- Hong Taiji- Shunzhi? There was a drama with Taiwan’s Steven Ma who always shouts his lines & acts like a looney, right? I am testing the audio book now. Yah, she does sound mature but rather good pronounciations. So far, sound rather boring. Anyway wait for your feedback b4 I decide to download it.

Oh no, I think more than 5 of the top 20 novels are time travel novels. If you exclude the modern novels, more than 50% of the ancient novels are time travel novels:( Why mainland has such an indecent obssession with this genre? No wonder, they are being banned from tv bcos this is really too much.

Yup, I love Qing history and I’ve read the wiki pages on the Aisin Gioro men so many times that I think I have some of them half-memorized.

Steve Ma’s drama on this time period is called Tai Zu Mi Shi (Secret History of the Founder of the Dynasty) and I was basically watching the big vein on his temple pulsating the entire forty-some episodes. I didn’t like his character because he was always chasing after Dong’ge (who didn’t like him) while he kept so many other women by his side but did not treat them very well…

The first ep of the audiobook was boring, but the pace really picks up when she time-travels.

Part of the reason is following the trend of successful stories. Have you seen the paranormal romance section at Barnes and Noble since Twilight came out, they have shelves of it now. Time travel probably gives the story more flexibility and easy reasoning on why the character is the way she is and how she is “unique”. There are only so many diao man ladies, honest maidens, and crossdressing girls one can take.

I’m all right with time travel novels, especially when the story actually takes it into consideration. Usually, it’s just mentioned once or twice and the time travel aspect disappears. Of course there is also the time travel into an alternate universe, which I don’t think really needs time travel, but it has it anyway.

I saw that drama before but can’t remember anything except he acted like a love sick puppy. Haha, xiaoyuer now I know you’ve a thing for bald man or man with queue, lol……..just joking. I know the history of the Ching era the best bcos it is nearest to our time & so many dramas are based on this dynasty. But I don’t really fancy this era bcos I dislike their queue making those men look so ugly !!! Also, the headdresses and platform shoes on those poor women:(

Hehe, I might really have a thing for bald men or men with queues. I found myself admiring the shape of a random guy’s head when I went to get froyo with my roommates today. I’m promise I’m usually not such a creeper!

Even though queues aren’t very attractive, when men like Kevin Cheng and Yuan Hong look amazing with one, I get extremely happy. HXM and Nicky Wu need to stick to non-Qing dramas though. I like the women’s outfits, especially the headdresses.

I saw a book about the main girl timetraveling into the mythological days in the form of a robe. Just weird, but somehow that book seems to have alot of readers like it too.

There’s been a few good time travelers. There is this other novel called “Never Be Consort” that is pretty good. That one by the time the story starts, she’s already been in that body for sometime already and gotten use to the time gap. Then there are also some really bad ones like, “I am not Lady Consort.”

I’m willing to give “An Unrivaled World” a chance because it has a nice title and the setting is during a time where I’m not that familiar with.

    How’s the girl’s character?

Yes yes! doesn’t the name just sounds like it would be epic? I remember when I first read BBJX’s name, I really liked it. 4 character phrases that ring nicely. Anything with ‘Tian Xia’ basically too hehe

I usually just can’t stomach the coincidence of a time-traveller landing one of those ‘most beautiful’s or historical figures that’s very famous. Too slim lol but I can deal with it if the story is very exciting and squeeze out every bit of advantage in that situation.

*sigh* but why can’t it just be like Xiang Bao in Grand Dream of Spring-Autumn and just give it a secret twist? Why MUST it be time-travel….. a question i want to ask all time-travel authors out there T_T

    xia0yuer September 14, 2012 at 4:08 am |

I’m actually not really sure about the title. It could be translated two ways. If the title was referring to the girl, it could being translated “Solitarily Traveling the World,” but I chose to interpret the title from Nurhaci’s perspective, in that he wanted to create an “Unrivaled World.”

I’m not very far yet (EP 4) but the girl seems strong enough to stand on her own. So far, she gives off a Ruo Xi feel (but again, I’m not very far yet).

It’s 誓不为妃. There’s 2 audiobooks. The one on cxt8 is incomplete. It’s a happy ending, but I never finished reading it. It didn’t have enough romance for the majority of the first half of the novel so I kept falling asleep on it. It’s suppose to be good though, but not my priority book to finish reading.

I probably watched too many KC’s TVB dramas bcos I honestly don’t fancy him. I admit he is handsome but his acting really leave me cold. I just finished his Getto Justice 2. OMG, that drama is so boring:( I know you ship KC in BBJX whereas I am on 4th prince team fr the beginning:P Did I tell you i saw BBJX last Sept on Hunan tv while I was in China? I switched on the tv & saw Nicky immediately, so fated like in a novel, lol.

Give me five, xiaoyuer:P The only Wallace’s drama I bought is TLTSILY. I’ll rewatch certain parts every now & then to satisfy my craving for him, lol. FYI, I saw it on channel 5 of my pay tv. I was going to post about this, but I never had time to. So glad xia0yuer did though!! I got really tangled up in all the Manchurian names (which really shouldn’t happen since I’m part Manchurian) but it was fun and a tad bit disturbing at times (*cough Nurhaci cough*). Haha, Kevin Cheng is so much better looking than Nicky Wu though. I remember when I watch him smile in that scene where he first met Ruo Xi, my heart completely melted. <3<3<3

Wallace in TLTSILY… so handsome! He is also in uniform half of the time in Imminent Crisis, but I like his blue warlord uniform more than the green Nationalist one. There's also Nei Xian (The Insider), but I think it's mostly about war with little romance so I was never that interested in it.

Ahh! This is so addicting! I’m on EP 17 now and I simply adore little Hong Taiji. 😀

    atsu-chan September 14, 2012 at 7:25 pm |

@chancy – I know I’m Manchurian through my grandmother on my father’s side. There are some features that are common in Manchurians (like bone structure and things like that), and one of my great-grandfathers was a prime minister in the court of the Jiaqing Emperor, but we have a Han last name from my grandfather. My grandmother has a last name that is both in Manchurian and in Han. I’m also part Uyghur through my mother’s side, so family history gets to be quite tangled and fun!

@xia0yuer – Nurhaci is NOT the male lead, Huang Taiji is (and thank goodness for that). I believe Bu Yeo Ran, the female lead, time travels into the body of DongGe (who is also known as Yehenara Buxiyamala) and she’s the love interest for the two sons of Nurhaci, Dai Shan and Chu Ying, although Papa Nurhaci is in love with her and rather forces his affections on her (it’s gross). Her little nephew is Huang Taiji, and in the novel she names him that, and he saves her a few times, I think. I got as far as there, but after Dong Ge’s death, Bu Yeo Ran’s soul travels into the body of Huang Taiji’s beloved concubine, Hailanzhu. I don’t know if they fell in love before the second body change, or while she was Dong Ge, but either way, it’s complicated.

Have you seen these two MVs?:

    http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/X7ccxYKP5Jc
    http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/sYHOQt4LuAw

    (TLY+WC+HSY for the win!!)

And I find the Huang Taiji/Hailanzhu story so romantic, so I was very excited about this. And Dong Ge is such a mysterious historical character and rumored to be so beautiful that so many men fought for her, so the premise is super fun. I want to continue this after I get through Once Promised (maybe at the same time ^^)!

    Hope this helps you guys!

  34. atsu-chan
    atsu-chan September 14, 2012 at 7:28 pm |

I actually ship her with Dai Shan. I’m around ep 17 too, and he’s such a sweetheart. It’s a bit hard to ship her with Huang Taiji just because he’s such a kid, but I’m sure I will.

  35. xia0yuer
    xia0yuer September 14, 2012 at 8:08 pm |

Thank goodness Nurhaci is not the male lead! He’s despicable, especially how he treats women like chattel.

So far, my favorite characters are Hong Taiji and Daisan. Because of the age difference right now, it’s hard to ship her and Hong Taiji, but he is one precocious little boy. It’s almost like he’s suppose to be her age but is stuck in a five year old’s body. As for Daisan, I love how he doesn’t touch that Ming Dynasty’s Junzhu. He’s completely different from Nurhaci and Chu Ying, who don’t treat their women properly.

It will be interesting when we get to the Hong Taiji/Hailanzhu storyline. Can’t wait!

Watched a little bit of the trailer atsu posted and I think I’ve taken enough spoilers to really want to jump in to this novel, but I can’t part with my tv. I don’t really mind long novels if it has enough quality content to cover the length.

So Bu Yeo Ran, the main girl, get’s involved with 3 generations? The papa, the son, and the son’s son? eeeeh….I wonder how this works out.

I am not gonna touch this book bcos it is way too long. I read the characters intro of Huang Taiji and all his women for Hawick Lau’s new drama In Love with Power. I gonna watch that drama when it is out then only touch this book if I like the story.

Xiaoyuer’s ancestors are from Shenyang which I think is part of Manchuria. Haha, no wonder she likes bald men with queue.P Maybe she & atsu are related during the ching dynasty:P

    atsu-chan September 15, 2012 at 1:45 am |

Hehe, maybe!! That would be fun!

I think the book will be way better than the drama though, Peanuts. I find Hailanzhu and Huang Taiji just so romantic. He named her palace after a famous love poem, and when her son was born, he named the boy Crown Prince, and they were both devastated when he died. And he passed not long after Hailanzhu died. It’s just so….*_* I even wrote a short story from Hailanzhu’s point of view from when she first met Huang Taiji…that was how excited I was by it!

Hey atsu, you’ve only finished 10% of the book:p I find my Mandarin is too poor for ancient audio books:( I am struggling to remember the names & understand many words. I’ve to concentrate really hard which makes the listening experience not as enjoyable. Thus, it is easier for me to watch them on screen. Most importantly, I am an impatient girl:P 169 chapters give me goosebumps, lol. Currently, I am having a blast listening to 微微一笑很倾城:)

  40. atsu-chan
    atsu-chan September 15, 2012 at 3:20 am |

Haha, yes, and then I drowned in Manchurian and decided to take a break. But I will go back – I promise! I’ve tried to start so many modern reads, but ended up being hooked onto Once Promised, so that’s a good thing. Once I’m hooked, I go fast and without sleep.

The drama is going to be about Xiaozhuang, who is Hailanzhu (or Harjol in Mongolian)’s sister, Bumbutai (or Dayu’er in Han Chinese), so it should be a fun watch. Usually, Hailanzhu is never the heroine in any Huang Taiji series, so it’s nice to see a book focus on her.

Let me know if 微微一笑很倾城 is any good! I may need a break from all the tears at some point 🙂

I sped read this book though that still took me about 5-7 days to complete

I didn’t like it. Maybe coz I’m a Chinese raised in this generation so I can’t accept the inter-family marriages and the polygamy of the period. Not to mention, too much political strife. And also too many long names to remember 😛

  42. Peanuts

I share your sentiments:) At least you can read Chinese. For me, Chinese names are already hard enough to remember not to mention the Manchu one. I know when I am reading a book, I am supposed to adapt to the mentality of that time period. Inter-family marriages & polygamy are the norm in ancient China. All I’ll say is I am gald I am born in this century. I will never time travel back in time as I can’t live without modern toilet & my beloved computer:) More importantly I do not wish to marry my cousin or relative, I can’t share my husband & I’ll not like or marry a married man:P My friend ship 14 prince in BBJX bcos she said she cannot support a single girl with a married man no matter what time period.

  43. xia0yuer
    xia0yuer September 15, 2012 at 11:22 pm |

Loving it so far. The girl certainly has some gumption, making that kind of deal with Nurhaci. After she was freed from Lan Yuan, I was a bit annoyed at her because it seemed that she had lost all her backbone, but her strength and the desire to create her own future is back!

I really liked Daisan in the beginning, but now, I don’t like him that much. Maybe it’s because he wasn’t there for her when she needed him most, or maybe its because he has so many wives, or maybe it’s just that he purposefully tricked Dong’ge to his estate because he didn’t have the guts to throw that foxy Abahai out.

But I love Hong Taiji more and more. He understands her so well and is always there for her. Perhaps she only sees him as a child now, but I feel like they’ve been fated since the beginning. If only he wasn’t born into the Aisin Gioro family…

  44. xia0yuer
    xia0yuer September 17, 2012 at 11:50 am |

Ugh! Men! I can’t believe Cuiying raped Dong’ge. Not even Nurhaci has sunk that low. He KNOWS that she likes Daisan and in a fit of jealousy/rage, he forced himself on her. When he realized that it was her first time, he even had the shamelessness to promise to protect her forever. And then, the next morning, he proceeds to rape her again! Ugh!

I was actually really touched when he told her that he loved her because he was the only person who has said that to her, but the feels he had were actually of lust, because if he truly loved her, would he have forced himself on her?

Seriously, the only guy worth liking right now is little Hong Taiji. Though he’s not that little anymore. It was hilarious when Dong’ge teased him about peeing in his bed (Hong Taiji was so embarrassed) but he quickly turned the tables and made Dong’ge embarrassed when he made her realize that he was actually having at wet dream. Hehe. 😀

Hong Taiji is eleven and Dong’ge is twenty. Well, her body is twenty and her soul is 33.
