In this world, there is a beautiful love when two people understand each other, when one can read the other person’s mind.
One day, while talking about work, he suddenly changes the subject: “I’ve pursued you for a long time, how do you feel?”
Xu Xu is surprised: “You’re pursuing me?”
He patiently lights a cigarette, his black eyes gazing at her intently: “I exercise with you every morning, I teach you how to shoot, everyone in the police force calls you sister-in-law …… what do you think I’ve been doing?”
Xu Xu is silent for a moment: “Um …… you don’t have to pursue me anymore.”
His heart drops in disappointment, his voice becoming cold: “What are you saying?”
“I also like you, so you don’t have to pursue me.”
“……”
She likes him. Although he appears arrogant and has a poisonous tongue, he is actually sweet and childish.

I’ve just finished reading this, and I enjoyed it. I like the female lead, who is a brilliant criminal profiler. The male lead is a seasoned and respected detective, responsible for guiding the female lead since she is a trainee. The progress of their relationship is quite cute, as is exemplified by the summary posted above. They started off on the wrong foot, gradually understanding and admiring one another’s ability, falling in love and finally having the courage to confess their feelings to each other.
Please be warned that the novel covers 3 crime cases in which the main couple will solve. While I found the cases interesting, the subject matter is heavy and involves gruesome details, especially the last case which revolves around serial murders. I had chills while reading this novel because the author did not shy away from the gruesome details so please be cautious if you plan to check this out.
I thought that they had very cute interaction but the gruesome part mademe think twice. Are they a bickering couple?:)
Hey, I read couple of chapters of this book some weeks back and it’s actually quite nice but i was lured away by the other black bellies, so I’ve pushed it aside (like what I’ve done to fifty odd other unfinished books….lol). Think I’ll revisit this book now and hopefully can finish it.
There’s a bit of bickering, but usually I think the main couple gets along rather well. Their relationship is like a black belly boss/naïve employee typically found in Chinese romance novels because he is the leader of the police investigation team while she is a trainee. Although she’s brilliant at criminal profiling, she’s bookish and naïve when dealing with people on an emotional level, which causes frustration for the male lead and results in some funny incidents.
The main couple’s relationship is cute and funny from the beginning to the end of the book. However, the investigative content gradually gets darker because of the crime cases, especially the last case which has a lot of gruesome details.
Physically, Xu Xu is very petite, appears to be weak and almost too fragile but in reality, she’s no damsel in distress. My first ever really “strong” and smart female lead.
Her every move is calculated, every step is measured. Everything she does is quantifiable, even her feelings and emotions.
She is smart, independent, no nonsense, straight to the point, very focus and knows exactly what she wants. But ever so regimented and systematic. It was scary and funny the way she calculated and analysed Ji Bai and her feelings towards him.
Overall, such a compatible couple. Another woman in another profession as his wife will not be able to tolerate his long working hours and his dedication at work.
So much thought process is put into such a book. The suspense is just the right amount, and there’s no dragging the storyline. The best part is the writer was even able to squeeze in some funny moments to balance out the morbid atmosphere. I particularly like the part where the diamond ring got stuck onto her finger while she was secretly trying it out. Really backfired on her decision not to get married so soon. I also like the fact that under all her rigid demeanour, she’s actually very feminine, just like an ordinary woman who is very particular about how she looks and what she wears.
I did feel kinda sad for Yao Meng though. When Ji Bai rejected her, I thought she would turn evil and vent her hatred onto Xu Xu. Yao Meng is just the type of unlucky people who wants to turn around their life but who’s efforts keep getting thwarted.
Reading funny books is like munching on cotton candies throughout, while reading this book is like having an eight course dinner. Very different feel.
It would have taken me several trips round the earth, then to Mars and back again and maybe few hundred other books later before I would have re-opened Detective Ji Bai on my own will had Lidge not posted the book. Big thanks to Lidge for the nudge to continue with the book and not allow it to gather dust (literally) on my shelf. Thumbs up….
Btw, do you have any other detective books?? Otherwise, I think I might have to re-read Sherlock Holmes…
Perfect description of Xu Xu and her awesome personality 🙂
I read the author spent a month doing research for the book. I particularly loved the details about criminal profiling.
Glad you enjoyed the book!!! This is the first Chinese romance novel I’ve read that’s in the police investigative nature. If I stumble on another book like this one, I’ll be sure to post it with you in mind 🙂
Hey Lidge, I was looking at my reading list and started nibbling away at this book, 慈悲城, and then suddenly realised it’s written by the same author as When A Snail Loves. And I also accidentally discovered that the lead couple, ChenBeiYao & MuShan is voted #38 in the top 50 most loving couple…..(as posted by Peanuts). By any chance, have you read this book?
I’m planning to read it, just haven’t found the time yet. However, I’ve read good reviews about it.
Happy new year folks 🙂
Imback and just finished reading this book…I loved it…..it’s not really that gruesome …hehe…rather interesting I must say..but then again I’ve got a high tolerance for gruesome stuff…I like watching criminal minds…haha…this book is sorta like that.
But I must say the bian tai part is really bian tai….but I must say that the childhood background had a real part to play….but poor Yao meng….she really had the short end of a stick…..
Now which book shall I venture to????
Happy New Year Pm!:)
I recommend you Black & White, a gangster book with a BT guy, lol. I’ve meant to read this book for a long time but never manage to find the time. I must get around to it ASAP.
Happy new year peanuts 🙂
Happy ending?? Ya must read this book….nice nice…. I like…..I recommend too….
Aiya, you & Xinn Xinn really a pair made in heaven, lol. Yes, very happy like a lark:P
Hey Pm, welcome to the Snail Club, I absolutely so love this book that I read it twice. I am waiting for someone (Lidge????) to read and post 慈悲城 by the same author, triad genre. Meanwhile, I am going to start on Black n White.
Thanks Xinn Xinn…I loved this book too….I like the way the described xu xu in the beginning…. A little vampire….haha…..
Spoiler spoiler….
Xinn need to ask u a question..,,
Those little face dolls in the last story…what do you think those eyes are made of? I guessed the teeth are the teeth of the real victims but the eyes?? Poor Yao meng… She’s just a major magnet for wierdos…isn’t she supposed to be a criminal profiler?? What happened to her skills….
I just got the 2013 annual report from wordpress. Congrats to Pm & Xinn Xinn for being the top 2 troublemakers (commenters) in SSB:P Xinn Xinn lost to Pm by 3 comments so you need to work harder this year, lol. Pm, I think you need to graduate and post at least a novel this year and not always depend on SSB:P
Cloudandsea, Eugene and Mel also made it to the honour list:P Anyway, thank you girls for your overwhelming support to make this bar more interesting and interactive:) Work harder this year, lol.
Pm, I didn’t put too much thoughts on the details. The teeth, the eyes…….too gory and creepy. For me, the book’s main attraction was Xu Xu’s personality and her relationship with Ji Bai. What an interesting couple.
As for Yao Meng, I was sad for her too. I think the turning point for her was when she realized she doesn’t stand a chance with Ji Bai. While she was also a smart girl (and very pretty), she was never as good as Xu Xu as a criminal profiler. Rejection, low self esteem compounded by poor family background, I guessed that was she she got strayed off the path.
Hey shi fu, Pm and I want a trophy.
Trophy for troublemakers? Ok, give you a jail sentence, both of you wanna get banned from the bar for how long, lol?
Nooooooo…dun ban us…the bar will be so boring without us rite Xinn? :p
U mean I posted so many comments…hehe didn’t realize….I will try k peanuts…I goggled the other book by same author. Going to read n see f it’s as good as this one.
Yeah…Xinn can u imagine dating n kissing a weirdo like tat??!! Not to mention making out with him……yyeewwkkksss…. But true I guess YM did hv inferiority complex to the point she lost her judgement…
Thanks for the recommendation! I actually stopped halfway after they confessed to each other, and heading towards the mission overseas to catch the female trafficker? A bit squeamish at the thought of the cases becoming more gruesome haha! But, the first half was super cute and funny.
Hi,
I’m an avid reader, and just lately, I’m interested in chinese lit.
And all because of DaMoYao translation @ KoalasPlayground.
Anyhow, I just want to ask, is there any english translation for this?
whether ebook or physical book, I’m really interested,
but too bad, I can’t speak / listen / read mandarin.
Thanks alot.
There is no English translation of Chinese romance novels in physical book or ebook unless famous martial arts novels by Louis Cha etc. Everything that have been translated are done by fans in their own blogs. Click the English translation link above for the list which doesn’t include this novel.
Yah. Even the famous ones that got adapted into dramas haven’t got any translations yet. 🙁
Hi, I really like this novel. I want to translate it to English. Can I ask you some information and use your opening of the novel? Thanks. Contact me @ my email ^_^ tiffany-dang@hotmail.com
I’m currently reading this book and it is quite riveting. Hopefully, I can last the whole journey as I’m used to shorter books.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Yey! I have finished this book and am glad to rate it a ‘good read’ to other interested readers. Thanks liege n all the others who recommended the book!
The first part is fast pace, with an intriguing mystery solved by the two leads – with one of them doing it long distance from another city! The second n third cases are a bit flat, and I may have found the book boring had it not been the fantastic chemistry between Li Bai ans Xu Xu. it is rare to find such a compatible couple – I’ll rank them after 4th Prince/Ruo Xi (BBJX) and Long Er/Mu Er (3 Marriages) – and I think you will find them amazing too. To quote Xu Xu, they are so in tune with each other, it will be a crime against heaven if she doesn’t marry him.
Moon blossom….I’m so glad u liked it…..go read close your eyes..by the same author…..lots more gruesomeness in it…..but I like the male lead…my kinda guy….smart cool and weird…..haha
Ah, the human-sashimi book…. I was reading all your comments and I got spooked with the male lead being tortured and forced into cannibilzation *ahmen* I mean it is bad enough to read about young kids being caged up, or promising young architects being diced up, but they are side characters whom the reader has less emotional attachment. And BJY sounds like a guy I would like and I hate to see him hurt. umm…. is that book like Snail, where the first part is the best? If so, I can do a hit, run, and abandon book after the second mystery. Even reading the spoilers make me feel bad for BJY.
Eh…I think the last is the best in this one….the front ones are pretty mild…but they all link up for the climax…so nope…can’t do a hit and run…..sorry… :p
I am one who hardly give up a book halfway after I start…but this one proof to be toooooo draggy…I am past the 2nd mystery and is at chapter 32..cannot deny the chemistry between the OTP is great. very in sync…but I think the pacing of the story is too slow for my liking..the 1-2 mysteries are very mild….I am actually very interested in XuXu’s brother….Hope he can find love again
This was amazing. Loved it all the way. Female lead was really unique and so very nice to read. It’s a nice change of tone compared to other female leads who are always silly and funny. The leads relationship is adorbs and mature at the same time. LOVED the crime and cases in the novel. I didn’t find it gory at all. It was a very interesting read.

Hey do you know where i can read/buy the translation of this book fully? I Really want to read it but i don’t understand chinese
Please someone finish this book translation…… I’m so curious about the ending…..
Xu Xu is a different breed, very forthright. I pity Yao Meng, to have met 2 pyscho boyfriends.. luckily she managed to find her true love in the end. I find City of Mercy a better book.
I enjoy reading the translation thus far but is it correct it stops after part 25?. Please tiffy or those kind heart here, help to advise me where can I read the english translation?
I love how XuXu calls Ji Bai “san ge (third brother)” and her actual real brother gets so jealous of it… lols.
