I can’t wait to read this. Is it good? Compared to chong zi? It seems more comical and lighthearted.
It’s a lot more lighthearted than Chong Zi, if only because there is no real pain/betrayal. I just realized I love angsty stories because I like main characters driven by guilt. Hong Ning is a lot stronger than Chong Zi. She isn’t nearly as dependent on love. She can focus and love deeply, but she still has her personal integrity. She won’t pursue someone who is impossible, especially if that person led her on. And she would sacrifice her life for honor and retribution.
My biggest complaint is that Bai Ling shows up too little, and that I didn’t understand the purpose of Yang Zhen. Oh, and the name Jin Xiu(锦绣) is a bit girly. But it does show that this life is this life, and even if you throw away everything to be together with a person for the next life, it will only be that life. For lives after that, you will be strangers to one another.
I actually like their occasional philosophical moments in which Jin Xiu tries to convince Hong Ning to cultivate. “Only immortals have forever.” “Humans reincarnate over and over. They die and are reborn. Isn’t that just another kind of forever?” (paraphrased)
By the way, would you help me think of a better translation for 神后, because Godly Empress sounds so ostentatious.
I feel that this story doesn’t focus on the relationship of the main couple but rather on the maturation of the main female lead through her personal decisions. She loves deeply, works hard for the main male lead to return her affections, recognizes that the supporting male lead had sacrificed so much for her, and in the end, chooses painful reincarnation cycles to repay the kindness of the supporting lead.
What I love most about this story is the female lead because she is a person of integrity and morals, especially her empathy for the supporting male lead because she sees and appreciates him loving her the way she loves the male lead. This rarely happens in romance novels because the female lead is usually too preoccupied with her relationship with the male lead to notice anything or anyone else.
Between the two books, I like Chong Zi more because the pace is faster, and it is way more angsty and dramatic mixed in with some cute and funny stuff. When Spring Ends was a bit boring for me. However, out of the characters of both books, I like the female lead in When Spring Ends the most.

I also liked that it was different from the other three lives styled stories. Instead of starting at the first life, When Spring Ends starts on the third. It follows with what Hong Ning says, “The past life is in the past, the future lives I won’t remember, I only care about this life.” Everything she does is for this life, if Jin Xiu never interfered with this life, she would never remember him.
The only reason we know about the past lives are because Hong Ning knows. Unlike other reincarnation stories where we know how the past lives go and how other characters are affected by her, we don’t know here.
By boring parts do you mean the part in the beginning with the death of the official and the middle part with the peach demon and the part with Lu Jiu’s cousin? I thought it was a little boring but I understood the reason behind it. I actually liked the peach demon brothers, especially when one of them pretended to be gay. Yang Zhen’s reaction was funny. It’s unfair that Jin Xiu can convince people so easily though.
And for once in XianXia, there isn’t a good vs evil argument. ^_^ Although, it’s not that XianXia-y.
I know abt this book. Listened to a bit of the radio drama I think by petboy. I did recommend skyblu this book but no time to read. I want an audiobook as I m lazy to read ancient book plus do not really like xiAn xia. Hey chancy, what is the latest book on cxt8 abt? Good?
When you first recommended it, and I read the summary, I didn’t really want to read it. It sounds very typical 3 lives reincarnation. After I read lidge’s comment on Hong Ning and the pretty trailer, I just had to read it. Got any more xianxia to recommend me?
The book begins with fighting the lake snake and then HN going to the temple with her sect brother and there’s some story about some pearl or cracked bell (sorry, can’t remember). I thought that whole thing was too long and unnecessary. Or maybe it was necessary, but I read too fast so didn’t understand the point. I know the snake swallowed the pearl(?) and got big, but what’s the point of the snake?
I have a (bad?) habit of judging books based on the first few chapters. When I don’t like how a book begins, it wouldn’t stop me from continuing to read it, but the book would have to be extremely good for me change my initial impression and like it. That didn’t happen in this case because the writing style of the author didn’t click with me.
The only part I liked was HN as a camellia in the yard of the supporting guy, and he blackmailed her to appear before him so he wouldn’t renovate that section of the yard, lol. That part was cute and funny!
I felt that those part established the characters pretty well. It continues on the belief that HN refuses to believe in fate and its unfairness. There was actually a Xian in the bell. It’s a xian who got punished for sleeping too much. He mentions Zhong Tian Wang to HN, though, and it instigates her curiousity.
I actually really liked Bai Ling even though he doesn’t really show up. The part about how he uses his nei dan to form a bracelet was really sweet of him. Duan Fei was a nice guy. It’s nice that you get two perspectives of him, once from HN and the other from Xiao Cha. I actually liked him when he met HN instead of the camellia. He was just so lonely. The males suffering from divine calamities were so depressing.
I have the same bad habit. It’s the biggest reason why I dropped Zhu Xian. The dream sequence of the first chapter got me hooked, especially after that trailer. It made me seriously wonder what could he do that changed her so much.

I read way too fast when I should’ve slowed down since I was forming an opinion of what I was reading. Another bad habit, lol.
Ur talking about the Heavenly Emperor (main guy) right? I totally love reading stories where these kind of things happen. Like that line inside Chong Zi where Chong Zi doesn’t want to forgive Luo Yin Fan, that totally made me want to read it.
Another reason why this story would interest me is because it’s about a flower spirit. I read Dian Xian’s Heavy Sweetness Ash-like Snow because of that too. This one seems that it will be more serious.
Actually the Heavenly Emperor is Jin Xiu’s shixiong. Jin Xiu used to be Zhong Tian Wang (King of the Central Heavens?) but he got demoted to a Higher Shen because of something. So he’s been in charge of the flowers.
I love it when the males try to make up for past regrets. The guilt driving them is so addicting. And you don’t have to feel bad for them because it’s their own fault.
I actually didn’t like Heavy Sweetness because Jin Mi was too naive and frivolous for my taste. Despite most people finding her cute, I thought she was a bit ridiculous, even if I understand that she pretty much has no emotions.

I listened to 3000 Crows Kill b4 and quite like it mainly bcos of C gege’s reading, heehee but not her best book. I read 销魂殿 is rather popular so you might wanna give it a try. I think there are a few guys so pls tell me if the guy you ship gets the girl in the end. Welcome back. It was very quiet without you. I did read 3000 Crows, but I didn’t like it very much. I’m actually putting my reading on hiatus for a while. I actually opened a tab for 销魂殿,but I haven’t started yet. I doubt the guy I ship will end up with the girl. I have major second lead shipping syndrome. I end up shipping the “wrong” couple at least 70
% of the time, so I doubt it would be right in XianXia.
Wow this girl chooses to give up first. I like that!! I can’t help but feel Chong Zi was so pitiful and helpless in her love for Chong Hua. The summary says nothing really about the second guy(s) but xianxia the side guys are usually easier get into my heart than the main guy too. Major problem with these xianxia main guys!!! But if this guy choose to do the pursuing than I will give him some brownie points.

Haha, you crack me up, Peanuts! I don’t exactly support ILWP, it’s just entertaining. Hailanzhu is my favorite historical character from the era, and historically was Huang Taiji’s true love although her younger sister Dayu’er became the empress dowager. Hailanzhu is the pretty one in this show ^^ This isn’t the one based on the FWSC novel (I think that one is stuck in pre-production) but the third in Yu Zheng’s 美人 series.
If you want a brief summary – it’s basically a Candy-redux in ancient garb. Dayu’er plays the kind and legitimate daughter to the leader of the Korchin Mongols and falls in love with Huang Taiji after he rescues her. Dorgon meets her on the same day at a huge festival and falls in love with her. And Huang Taiji somehow seems to strangely fall in love with Hailanzhu, Dayu’er’s illegitimate sister. How and why he fell in love with her is never really fleshed out or explained, he just sort of…did. Huang Taiji is the typical cold exterior, warm interior ruler, Dorgon the playful and sincere younger brother, and Hailanzhu as the misused and abused Cinderella type who decides to take revenge. The plot is very trademark Yu Zheng so far, but not quite as complex as Schemes of a Beauty. The set is quite beautiful and the costs are bright but nice to look at. The only thing I didn’t really like was how the drama dealt with the succession rivalry between Dorgon and Huang Taiji. I’m going to post about it since it’s obvious who became the king, but apparently it was Dayu’er who was with Nurhaci when he died and he told her two names, Huang Taiji and Dorgon. She decides to tell the brothers that Nurhaci wanted Huang Taiji to be king, and the oldest brother Dai Shan made her swear to her word, and if what she was telling was a lie, then her husband would never love her, and her children would never respect her….which basically sets up the entire drama based on a curse. I felt sort of ehhh about that. I wish they’d remake 独步天下 and give Hailanzhu some love! I even wrote a short story about her for class.

Yes, you’ve guessed correctly. I’ve been buried by books because I’ve just discovered an awesome new author so I’ve been busy reading everything I can find. Her name is 曹婷, but I think her online author name is 宝妻. I rate her as somewhere in the middle of FWSC and TQGZ. I’m translating the titles from Viet. Hopefully the Chinese titles I found are correct.
– Villain In the Beginning, Good Guy In The End (not sure about the Chinese title): My first book of the author and what started my sleepless marathon over the last few days. Female lead is the neglected younger daughter of a wealthy family who inadvertently catches the attention of the most sought after bachelor in the city. Typical Cinderella plot, but I liked it.
– Rouge Powder Brothel (青楼粉黛?): Takes place in the Song Dynasty, I think. Female lead is a young lady from a respectable family married off to an influential family. Her husband ignores her. After not being able to get pregnant, she returns to her family in disgrace. She meets her cousin who tricks her and sells her off to a brothel. She becomes the most coveted prostitute in the most famous brothel in the city. Her life begins a downward spiral due to lies from men who profess to love her. Very sad ending!!!
– You Buried Me In the Previous Life (前世你埋的我?): Male lead has the perfect life and perfect girlfriend. He meets a florist and falls madly in love with her and ends up abandoning his girlfriend. The florist tells him about her tragic past and one day disappears. He meets her again as his brother’s girlfriend and eventually discovers the tragedy between the woman he loves and his brother. Sad but good ending.
– Apricot Breathless (红杏的苍白呼吸?): Male lead had a rough, poor childhood in the countryside. He goes to work in a big city. By lucky coincidence, he is adopted by a wealthy family. The only daughter of the wealthy family falls in love with him only to discover he’s already married to a much older woman. He brings his wife to the city. Problems begin when his wife can’t adapt to city life, leading to tragic results. Ending can be considered happy in that the main couple are together, but it’s sad for me because I felt bad for the wife.
– Love You More Than Death (我比死神还爱你?): Read this long, long time ago so can’t really remember except I think the story was good. Happy ending, I think.
– If It’s Fate, We’ll Meet Again ( 厮混了就一定会厮守么?): Female lead has three men in her life: a best friend she’s grown up with, a school friend, and her best friend’s older cousin. Her life is entangled with these three men. Just when she thinks she’s finally found the person she’s meant to be with, a confession changes everything. Happy ending or sad ending depending on which male lead the reader roots for.
– Sorry, I’m Just A Prostitute (don’t know the Chinese title): Male lead meets a mysterious girl who he thinks is a prostitute. Fascinated by her, he pays her to sleep with him and they begin a relationship. When he falls in love with her, she disappears. He meets another girl, marries her, and has a child. At this point, he finds out the truth about the prostitute he had loved years ago. Sad ending.
– Brother, Sister (don’t know the Chinese title): Just started. Currently reading this.

She become disillusion and wanna marry a rich guy so no need to be poor anymore. She has actually changed but pretended to be a candy girl to fish a rich man.
Our male lead picked up his life and become CEO of a luxury brand. He is attracted to the female lead bcos of her devotion to her poor boyfriend. It is rare to find a girl who is not materialistic. He does not know the girl has changed. The irony is her ex gf is the one who is helping the girl to change, to fish a rich man. The drama sound a lot more interesting than my summary. The interactions between the leads are very sweet and cute. I like the rabbit emoticon dolls, so adorable.
Wah, all the books u have been reading are so sad. I wanna stArt my year with a happy book. I read reviews on that prostitute book, so so sad. Even the review nearly bought tears to my eyes. Eeeeee too realistic and harsh, I do not think I gonna read it. I dun like the guy, so judgmental. Serve him right that he will live in regret forever.

On a separate note, have you guys seen Shunji Iwai’s Love Letter? Really sweet movie and a great watch. I also saw the end of In Love With Power. That beautiful, beautiful opening to the theme song has made me watch more scenes than I wanted to. Dorgon’s death scene is hands down the best in the whole show. At least it made me feel teary.
Alice seems very interesting than. I’ll save that to watch in May if I get the job. I’ll be so bored and lonely in Alaska so I need to save up some good dramas to keep me company through that 5 months.

J-dramas are so much more interesting! And you didn’t miss much with In Love With Power. I don’t recommend it. It’s just that opening of the theme song is too beautiful…made me stop and watch every scene when it started playing….. But Han Dong is much too good to be in that show. And much too handsome, haha!

I hope this bad translation can help a little. His song is very ancient feel and poetic and I don’t get those idioms that he uses so it was pretty hard to translate it. The song would make more sense to me if I read all his books so I’m pretty clueless also. lol I’m listening to it again and again.

But once I got to Abu I kept picturing LYF and ended up writing very stilted hehe… Haha that name is just one of the screen names that I use in Chinese.its hard to think of a good one and I always think mine sound weird so it’s nice to hear that mine is someone sane. I use Atsu in English after my favorite taiga drama character Atsu-hime ^^
少女血 feels very different because the main character in the part I listened to was a little girl whose mother died and her father brought in a new stepmother and two stepbrothers. There are so many good voices and its rather entertaining to read about a little girl who thinks she knows what’s going on. 且式天下 is rather hard to get into because its so complicated but I know I’ll like it. I also know that I don’t like Ming Xiao Xi. I tried reading 会有天使替我爱你 and wanted to throttle somebody. If you girls want I can make another book post.
Hahaha I didn’t like Han Dong very much after BBJX either but then he sort of grew on me. I didn’t watch CDYY but his Dorgon was extremely handsome and capable. Best thing about the entire show. Dorgon and that wicked opening to the theme song!
>< 会有天使替我爱你 is it bad? I rented it before, but never really started reading it. Is it the type of story that makes you want to pull your hair? I had bad experience with this author inside "The Flame's Daughter." I can't handle the whole maybe she did fall inlove with him type of ending. I'm never satisfied with a maybe because it just makes me want to bang my head on something or maybe strangle the author to get a confirmation as to whether or not the main girl loved the main guy.

I know! MXX is not my cup of tea. She writes like sjouke manga which isn’t bad when you want a fluffy pink hearts kind of read but you have to know it going in. I had a really bad time with 泡沫之夏。烈火如歌 was a little better for me but all her characters feel one dimensional. 会有天使替我爱你 is just really 变扭。it’s about a girl whose boyfriend died but his heart was given to another man and so the main character goes in search of this man to be close to her dead boyfriend’s heart but the two end up falling in love. But the guy has heart disease and is super irritable and has attitude issues and then there’s the dead boyfriend’s long lost twin who unintentionally complicates things. See what I mean – 变态！but I think young teenage girls might like it?
I was looking for a good modern read to balance off the three very heavy 仙侠/武侠 books I’m reading but haven’t had any luck yet. 少女血feels good but it’s been on hiatus for so long…
The other stuff I sampled – 海棠囚妻 has an interesting premise (the younger son of the king wants to take revenge on the people who killed his mother and happens to marry the beautiful girl from their family and uses her like an instrument of revenge) but funny execution with a very childish girl and a really weird guy. I tried both 邪皇的宠妃 and 歌尽桃花 but just couldn’t get into them. They’re not bad though but I should probably finish what I have first 🙂 I’ve done a whole lot of sampling and not a lot of finishing haha!

Hey atsu, did you try the new modern book by spider? I read good comments on that book. I listened to 歌尽桃花 b4. The story is very the long but it is actually quite good bcos the male lead is very nice willing to give up the country for the girl. Not your usual palace book where the male lead will give up the female lead or use her for revenge etc. But I don’t like the reader. Abt a quarter into the book, the book also changed reader. I just can’t stand sissy male voice:( Cxt8, pls pls in future the male must sound like a man, lol. Hey, you finished Lost Youth? If not, continue since it is a good book.

You can get your fix at your usual hunt:P There is abt 70 plus chapters & 2 chapters will be uploaded each day. I am thinking of starting next week during easter break which should be around the half way mark of the upload. Both of u started already?
The problem with Shu Ke’s stories, I find, is that while she might have a good plot, the way she organizes the story is very confusing. Doesn’t help that her writing is kind of dry.
Chaps 1-13: HN and BL are in the same sect. The story opens with them fighting a lake monster and then they go to a temple where they hear a legend about a cracked bell. HN meets a mysterious guy called JX from time to time who helps her. JX is the male lead. Eventually, BL goes back with his father who is one of the heavenly gods or something. This is just 1 lifetime in HN’s reincarnation cycle. Personally, I think the story is better off without this part because it just makes it confusing. Don’t dwell on this because it doesn’t have any bearing on the story except to emphasize that HN is caught in a cycle of reincarnation though Shu Ke could’ve chosen a better way to write this.
Chaps 14-29 : HN meets some guy with the last name of Yang and some other ppl. JX appears again whenever HN needs help. This part isn’t important either in my opinion.
Chaps 30-35: HN is saved by Duan Fei. This part isn’t important either in my opinion.
Chaps 36-end: This is where the story really begins in my opinion. HN remembers everything and her memory begins way back when she was an unimportant camellia flower and meets JX at a flower banquet in the heavens. She declares her love for him and tells him she wants to be his queen. He tells her she needs to cultivate. To do that, she undergoes challenges to move to the next level. One of the challenges is to go to the human world but it’s important for her not to fall in love with a human. She goes and becomes a camellia flower in the supporting guy’s yard. That part of the yard is about to be leveled to build something so she begs him to leave it alone. He agrees if she promises to appear to him in human form every night to talk to him. Eventually, their relationship deepens. One day, HN sees him with another woman (she only sees the woman’s back) and thinks he has betrayed her and lied that he loved her. HN is mad at him so she doesn’t appear in human form to talk to him anymore. One day, there’s a big storm and a big rock rolls towards her. She’s a flower and thus, is defenseless. Suddenly, the supporting guy appears to stop the rock and is killed by it. Finally, HN realizes that it had been a misunderstanding. The woman HN saw is JX’s servant who appeared in HN’s form so the supporting guy thought he was talking to HN, hence the big misunderstanding. At this point, HN realizes the huge sacrifice the supporting guy had done for her and how much she had hurt him. She abandons cultivation and chooses to enter a cycle of reincarnation to repay the supporting guy. And she does.
Finally, HN is in some sort of trouble and JX appears to save her. In the end, JX chooses to save HN by giving up his heavenly status and becomes human and goes through reincarnation like HN. Fast forward to modern time, HN is an employee and she will meet her boss who is JX. This is where the story ends, but we’re led to believe they”ll be together because they’re fated to be with each other.
I think there’s a sequel. I tried reading it but so boring I had no idea what I was reading so dropped it. So basically for When Spring Ends, I feel you don’t need to read chaps 1-35. Just begin with chap. 36 and you still understand.
I’m starting to get addicted. Must say I find myself liking Hong Ning much more than Chong Zi. She has more character in her. Right now I’m really liking Yang Zhen. Jing Xiu this guy……. >< I think I can relate to Hong Ning.

I just started on this audiobook not too long ago. I originally wanted to follow along and read but gave up on that since I usually pass out after 10 mins of the audiobook 🙁 Much tireds lately. I’m really enjoying it, I love Hong Ning as a female character, she has her principles and sticks with it. I love her little ‘ren xing’-ness (immature?) yet always having witty responses. Up til now I’m loving her interactions with Yang Zhen and Duan Fei. Yang Zhen reminded me somewhat of Huang Chao from WGTW. I really liked Duan Fei though! He was such a nice guy, but so lonely even with all that money and women around him 🙁 But apparently those were all… illusions? Cus it switched to the part where Hong Ning was still a camellia sprite who fell in love with Jin Xiu… See this is what happens when I don’t follow along with the novel !
