“The most dangerous thing in the world is the human heart. It can kill an immortal life, and can harm a body that was unsusceptible to harm.”
“Speak intelligibly.”
“I was dismembered by my previous lover.”
“…… So…… Why are you still alive?”
“So that I could meet you.”
[Ebook] [Hộ tâm][Eng Translation][Drama]
It seems very interesting, I might actually read it.
Have you finished it yet?
This story begins with the female lead being expelled from her sect where she had been undergoing cultivation to become an immortal. She then meets the male lead, an ancient dragon demon, who is presently powerless as he was dismembered by his previous lover. The male lead and the female lead then embark on a journey where they attempt to retrieve all the male lead’s body parts and resolve the various mysteries that have been troubling the cultivation world.
Unlike most of Jiu Lu Fei Xiang’s other novels, this novel is glaringly lacking in the hilarity factor. Whilst most of Jiu Lu Fei Xiang’s novels tend to adopt a more relaxed tone, this is noticeably missing from the book, probably due to the numerous mysteries surrounding the two main leads. Furthermore, the female lead has received rather divided opinions, as the readers have largely divided themselves into two extremes – those who intensely dislike the female lead, and those who love her. This can be largely accrued to the female lead’s character, as Yan Hui is someone who is only willing to expend effort to care for those whom she loves, and tends to be rather unwilling when standing up for the rights of those she’s unfamiliar with. As such, when Yan Hui meets the male lead, she continually refuses his request to help him in his quest to collect his body parts as the quest is an extremely dangerous one. That said, she does finally relent and the two start on their journey.
The male lead, being an ancient dragon demon who has been betrayed by his loved ones, is rather guarded and wary of people at the start, and does not truly come clean with Yan Hui until much later. For most parts of the book, although the male lead cares for Yan Hui, he is not above manipulating her and trying to steer her to head in the direction he wants her to go. Although he is very cautious of people, he gradually lets down his guard when Yan Hui continually protects him on numerous occasions, frequently putting her life on the line for him despite it being of no benefit to her. That said, due to the male lead’s past relationship history and the female lead’s affections for her teacher, the romance in this book moves rather slowly when compared to Jiu Lu Fei Xiang’s other books.
In short, this is a hit/miss book, depending on whether one likes the female lead or not, and is rather different when compared to Jiu Lu Fei Xiang’s other books.
@ princessblaine
I finished the book, but I didn’t care very much for the female lead in that she didn’t particularly stand out to me. I did like the male lead though.
If you want to read Jiu Lu Fei Xiang’s books, I think it’s better to go with any of the following: (a) Sansheng, Death Exists Not At the River of Oblivion; (b) Seven Unfortunate Lifetimes All Thanks To A Single Moment of Impulse; and (c) Accompanying the Phoenix. I think those three books are her more representative works. 🙂
I hope this one isnt like Si Ming…. that one was quite disappointing for me. 🙁
@ serendipity
Ah, I would say this novel isn’t as draggy as Si Ming was, but it was definitely lacking (for me, at least). The female lead’s been a hit/miss amongst the readers. In addition, the second male lead has quite a fair number of shippers as well, which detracts from Jiu Lu Fei Xiang’s usual style of ensuring that the male lead and female lead were made for each other. You can give it a try though, if the premise interests you (:
@ serendipity
Sure thing! ^^ If you ever get around to reading it do let me know your thoughts! I was so excited to start a new Jiu Lu Fei Xiang book (she has quite a couple of hits in my eyes), only to be somewhat let down by this book. :/
@ silhoutte
Accompanying the Phoenix has been introduced on SSB previously, the link is as follows: https://www.shushengbar.net/?p=6574
The Chinese name is 与凤行/本王在此. Do give it a shot, I think it’s a pretty lovely book with an awesome male and female lead.
@ dramasbooksandtea
Im so conflicted… I put this novel at the end of the list
@dramabooksandtea
(c) Accompanying the Phoenix.
Would appreciate if you could give a brief summary of the above title and translate this title to Chinese that I can search for it?
Thanks!
Hi there…i am also another big fan of “阿九” ancient books..I second all dramabooksandsea recommendation…those 3 are very good read for me too…hence i was even a little dissappointed on this book..more than “魔尊”-demon lord. I finished this book in 2 days. There is too much shadow of Guoguo’s 花千骨”。。i like 阿九 books being funny and short..this is way too draggy…plus i find myself very much a shipper of her /her master 🙁 There is another master/disciple series which i really like..so far both are written in short stories…for those who can read chinese, u might like to check this too “师父系列” by the same author .thks for putting this up ♡♡♡♡
@snow berries
I DEFINITELY WILL CHECK OUT THE MASTER DISICPLE SERIES!!! I didnt know it existed so thanks for the heads up! Are they HE?
Have you read 桑歌?Its another short story by Nine that i recently discovered in the abyss known as the internet. Its kinda bittersweet and a nice read on the bus.
@dramasbooksandtea
I definitely will.. when i get to it… lols the list is getting really long…
@ SnowBerries
A fellow 阿九 fan! I’m going to have to agree with you this time round, I found shadows of 花千骨 in it as well. I didn’t think this book was draggy (in that the events move quite quickly) but I simply found myself unable to care for the female lead though I did care (somewhat) for the male lead. I hope 阿九 comes back with another book that blows my mind again!! ^^
@ serendipity
Haha I’ll give 桑歌 a read when I have the time! Since it’s short it should be a fairly easy read 🙂 Haha I did read some of 阿九’s short stories though, like 陈先生与程太太 and 倾世. I prefer her longer novels though ^^;; And… good luck with your growing list of books xp
@ serendipity
I notice all of 阿九 short stories carry a bitter sweet tint including 桑歌. I read Eastern palace and 华胥引 before so while this is nicely written, it is too short to leave a deep impression. I like my stories fun and sweet….”once impulsive, 7 years of unlucky” is still my most favourite read…his 2 other short stories 桃妖 and 挖坟 is more my cup of tea.
Hi serendipity. Thanks for introducing Sang Ge!! Really enjoyed it. It felt similar to another novel introduced in the novel where the female lead also passed away and continued to follow the male lead after her death as a ghost.
But I would prefer a better ending – the male lead telling the female lead that she no longer has to wait for him. Ah sigh.
@cloudandsea
No problem. its nice to share with others!
I interpreted the last part different than you. When he said that she no longer had to wait for him, I interpreted it as he was about to meet up with her. In other words, the king was about to die and they would reunite and she no longer had to wait. Im not sure if my interpretation was correct but that was my thought. I like to think they ended up together cause i cant stand angst. lols.
@snowberries
Ill definitely give those a try. I had tao yao on my list. lols! Im currently taking a mini modern refresher before i dive back into ancient books. 🙂 I dont mind bitter sweet short stories cause im not as attached to the characters…. But i really liked sang ge. Her character really made an impact on me. I have no idea why but she did.
My favorite nine book is San Sheng but 77 is definitely really refreshing.
I’ve been reading too many modern novels and was just craving an adventure/cultivation story so I’m going to give this a shot! Thanks for the recommendation.
@ Tea.Thyme I hope you’ll enjoy it more than I did! ^^;;; Have you read other Jiu Lu Fei Xiang books? I think they’re much better (:
@dramasbooksandtea
I think I probably enjoyed it a bit more than you did. 😀 Aside from this book, I have only read “Sansheng” but now that I am done with this one, I think I will move onto “Accompanying the Phoenix”. I believe that is a rather popular one on SSB. 🙂
I don’t particularly like how flimsy the romance in this book can be at times (I like the characters of this novel a lot more when I don’t focus on this aspect) so I tried to ignore it and mainly focused on the adventures, the mystery, and the action. I think that probably made it a more enjoyable read.
@ Tea.Thyme
I’m glad you enjoyed it more than I did! Whilst I would like some of the characters more if I didn’t focus on the romance, I generally found the characters unmemorable, so it was very difficult for me to truly immerse myself in the characters and care for them. I guess I’m just used to Jiu Lu Fei Xiang’s awesome characterizations that I felt rather disappointed.
I must say though, she’s getting better at writing mysteries! This time round, I did feel a greater sense of curiosity to know why the strange events were happening (more than in Seven Lifetimes anyway). You can try reading Seven Lifetimes too! I think it’s quite well received on SSB 🙂
I must be one of the outliers here, because I actually find both the story and characters interesting LOL. My own interpretation of the female character is that she may appear heartless, because she consistently tells herself and other characters that she doesn’t want to help, etc. However, if we also look at her actions, she consistently put herself in risky situations for others. She may not have lengthy, cheesy dialogues/soliloquy explaining why she thinks justice should be served like other heroines, but the story slowly clues us in on her moral values and character based on her actions. So, I actually find her to be quite unique.
Similar to Demon King’s romance, I actually enjoyed the gradual development of the relationship. Based on both leads’ history, it wouldn’t make sense if the relationship had developed too fast. Otherwise, both characters would seem fickle and unloyal in the “name of love” LOL.
I love this novel. It is very well written. The MC’s thoughts and deeds. A fiesty and outspoken girl. Not your atypical beautiful Mary Sue. The author never describe as beautiful. ML is pretty though. A story about two destined to help each due to fate. ML slowly warmed to MC. The supporting characters are interesting too. It is funny and yet when MC had to sacrifice for the ML, it is sad and sweet.
