In this world, there is a beautiful love when two people understand each other, when one can read the other person’s mind.

One day, while talking about work, he suddenly changes the subject: “I’ve pursued you for a long time, how do you feel?”

Xu Xu is surprised: “You’re pursuing me?”

He patiently lights a cigarette, his black eyes gazing at her intently: “I exercise with you every morning, I teach you how to shoot, everyone in the police force calls you sister-in-law …… what do you think I’ve been doing?”

Xu Xu is silent for a moment: “Um …… you don’t have to pursue me anymore.”

His heart drops in disappointment, his voice becoming cold: “What are you saying?”

“I also like you, so you don’t have to pursue me.”

“……”

She likes him.  Although he appears arrogant and has a poisonous tongue, he is actually sweet and childish.

  • I’ve just finished reading this, and I enjoyed it. I like the female lead, who is a brilliant criminal profiler. The male lead is a seasoned and respected detective, responsible for guiding the female lead since she is a trainee. The progress of their relationship is quite cute, as is exemplified by the summary posted above. They started off on the wrong foot, gradually understanding and admiring one another’s ability, falling in love and finally having the courage to confess their feelings to each other.

Please be warned that the novel covers 3 crime cases in which the main couple will solve. While I found the cases interesting, the subject matter is heavy and involves gruesome details, especially the last case which revolves around serial murders. I had chills while reading this novel because the author did not shy away from the gruesome details so please be cautious if you plan to check this out.

  • I thought that they had very cute interaction but the gruesome part mademe think twice. Are they a bickering couple?:)

  • Hey, I read couple of chapters of this book some weeks back and it's actually quite nice but i was lured away by the other black bellies, so I've pushed it aside (like what I've done to fifty odd other unfinished books....lol). Think I'll revisit this book now and hopefully can finish it.

There’s a bit of bickering, but usually I think the main couple gets along rather well. Their relationship is like a black belly boss/naïve employee typically found in Chinese romance novels because he is the leader of the police investigation team while she is a trainee. Although she’s brilliant at criminal profiling, she’s bookish and naïve when dealing with people on an emotional level, which causes frustration for the male lead and results in some funny incidents.

The main couple’s relationship is cute and funny from the beginning to the end of the book. However, the investigative content gradually gets darker because of the crime cases, especially the last case which has a lot of gruesome details.

  • Physically, Xu Xu is very petite, appears to be weak and almost too fragile but in reality, she's no damsel in distress. My first ever really "strong" and smart female lead.

Her every move is calculated, every step is measured. Everything she does is quantifiable, even her feelings and emotions.

She is smart, independent, no nonsense, straight to the point, very focus and knows exactly what she wants. But ever so regimented and systematic. It was scary and funny the way she calculated and analysed Ji Bai and her feelings towards him.

Overall, such a compatible couple. Another woman in another profession as his wife will not be able to tolerate his long working hours and his dedication at work.

So much thought process is put into such a book. The suspense is just the right amount, and there's no dragging the storyline. The best part is the writer was even able to squeeze in some funny moments to balance out the morbid atmosphere. I particularly like the part where the diamond ring got stuck onto her finger while she was secretly trying it out. Really backfired on her decision not to get married so soon. I also like the fact that under all her rigid demeanour, she's actually very feminine, just like an ordinary woman who is very particular about how she looks and what she wears.

I did feel kinda sad for Yao Meng though. When Ji Bai rejected her, I thought she would turn evil and vent her hatred onto Xu Xu. Yao Meng is just the type of unlucky people who wants to turn around their life but who's efforts keep getting thwarted.

Reading funny books is like munching on cotton candies throughout, while reading this book is like having an eight course dinner. Very different feel.

  • It would have taken me several trips round the earth, then to Mars and back again and maybe few hundred other books later before I would have re-opened Detective Ji Bai on my own will had Lidge not posted the book. Big thanks to Lidge for the nudge to continue with the book and not allow it to gather dust (literally) on my shelf. Thumbs up....

Btw, do you have any other detective books?? Otherwise, I think I might have to re-read Sherlock Holmes...

Perfect description of Xu Xu and her awesome personality :)

I read the author spent a month doing research for the book. I particularly loved the details about criminal profiling.

Glad you enjoyed the book!!! This is the first Chinese romance novel I've read that's in the police investigative nature. If I stumble on another book like this one, I'll be sure to post it with you in mind :)

  • Hey Lidge, I was looking at my reading list and started nibbling away at this book, 慈悲城, and then suddenly realised it's written by the same author as When A Snail Loves. And I also accidentally discovered that the lead couple, ChenBeiYao & MuShan is voted #38 in the top 50 most loving couple.....(as posted by Peanuts). By any chance, have you read this book?

I'm planning to read it, just haven't found the time yet. However, I've read good reviews about it.

  • Happy new year folks :)

Imback and just finished reading this book...I loved it.....it's not really that gruesome ...hehe...rather interesting I must say..but then again I've got a high tolerance for gruesome stuff...I like watching criminal minds...haha...this book is sorta like that.

But I must say the bian tai part is really bian tai....but I must say that the childhood background had a real part to play....but poor Yao meng....she really had the short end of a stick.....

Now which book shall I venture to????
