This novel details the journey of a neglected child and her idol, a athlete and her coach, and an impoverished child and her benefactor. Unlike Jiu Xiao Qi's other novels, this novel adopts a more serious tone, with less humour and funny anecdotes injected into the novel. That said, she nevertheless manages to craft a relatively compelling story that chronicles how, after the sudden accident and subsequent retirement of tennis superstar Nan Feng, a poor but determined girl decides to take up tennis and follow in his footsteps - if he wasn't able to stand on the tennis courts and shine, she would do it on his behalf. After re-encountering Lu Sheng after his accident, Nan Sheng sympathises with Lu Sheng's plight, and begins to care and provide for her. As she begins to entrench herself in his life, he gradually sees her as a beacon of hope and light in the darkest period of his life. Along the way, admiration and idolisation gradually transforms into love and reliance, and Lu Sheng begins to fall in love with Nan Sheng. Nan Sheng, however, initially experienced a difficult time accepting Lu Sheng's love for him. After all, having cared for her and 'raised' her since she was young, it was difficult for him to admit that he too, loved her in a non-platonic manner.
The male lead, Nan Feng, is a former tennis superstar who was forced to retire when his accident results in him suffering from injuries that permanently incapacitates his ability to play competitive tennis. It is in this dark period of his life that he re-encounters Lu Sheng and begins their journey together. He starts to coach her tennis, and when she begins to mature, he helps to pave her way by hiring experienced coaches and continuously encourages her to breakthrough her barriers and limitations. Having come from a family background with parents suffering from an acrimonious relationship, he finds it extremely difficult to truly 'love' someone, which is partially why he took a longer time to discover that perhaps, he did, in fact, love Lu Sheng like how she loved him. Once he broke through that barrier, he waits for Lu Sheng to grow up and mature before finally getting together with her.
Lu Sheng, the female lead, is a young and impoverished child who grew up in a single parent household and an emotionally abusive mother. Poor and trapped for money, she first gets to know Nan Sheng when her school allocates funds provided by Nan Sheng to her as a form of financial assistance. From that moment on, the seed of gratitude has been implanted in her heart. After the accident, she searches for Nan Sheng, and on successfully finding him, she begins her journey to learn tennis and slowly transforms into a rising tennis star with her hard work and determination. Despite being rejected numerous times, she remains steadfast in her love for Nan Sheng and never wavered in her love for him.
Good book but the ending's abit abrupt, hopefully 七哥will continue the story.
