After graduation, Zhang Nan couldn’t find a good job and went to study abroad in Australia. In Australia, he met and was attracted to Fang Hui who was also studying. Coincidentally, due to certain reasons, Fang Hui and Zhang Nan lived together under the same roof. He also managed to find out from his friends how Fang Hui was once deeply hurt by a man. By chance, in Zhang Nan’s room, Fang Hui shared with him about her story.
This book talks about the story of a group of teenagers born in the 1980s. As Fang Hui shared her story, it was as if she returned to those days. Those days spent in school were filled with happiness and romance. That was where she spent her youth.

This is one of my favourite novels. One word to describe it – heartbreaking. It left the same impact I had when I read TH’s Yun Zhong Ge, except that I hated the male lead A LOT. The ending is open but I interpret it as a sad ending.
I wrote my thoughts on it in a blog after reading it. In fact, it is my first one! I had so much thoughts and feeling about it that I couldn’t control myself but write. Do give this novel a try! However, it is really a longgggg novel. I took nearly 4 days reading during my holidays…
After reading this book, I was shocked and felt that this story is so realistic. A young boy promised to love a girl. But that was not true. Everything turned out pathetic soon after. The reason I say Cong Cong Na Nian is realistic is because it depicts how the male lead couldn’t resist temptation and fresh things, just like how most men are like in real life. From the start, Fang Hui and Chen Xun are two people belonging to two different worlds. Initially, Chen Xun tried various ways to speak to Fang Hui because he was jealous and couldn’t understand why Fang Hui was so cold. He was attracted because she was special. She was quiet, unlike other girls. However, during the process of getting to know each other, Chen Xun gradually fell in love with Fang Hui. But does he know that the reason why Fang Hui is so quiet is because she is insecure. Facing a guy like Chen Xun who is excellent in all areas caused her to lose more confidence. A guy like Chen Xun wasn’t a man Fang Hui could handle. He is smart and handsome, but because he is young, he does not know how to think about other people’s feelings. He doesn’t care, he follows his own guts. To be it simply, he is plain selfish. It was him, who started their relationship. It was the scheming Chen Xun who wrote “Fang Hui likes Chen Xun” on the whiteboard so that he can get close to Fang Hui… and that is how their relationship began. It was the selfish Chen Xun who hid the fact that he was together with Xiao Tang from Fang Hui because he coudn’t bear to tell her the truth that he no longer loves her. Fang Hui witness how Chen Xun and Xiao Tang publicly displayed their affection for each other. What is that? What about the love they had? It turns out that when there is no love, everything is nothing. Why did Chen Xun even confess to Fang Hui? If it was Qiao Ran who confessed first, Fang Hui would have been happier. Qiao Ran can’t bring her a love filled with passion and excitement but at least, I feel that Qiao Ran is a responsible man. He is someone you can trust and someone worth spending your life with. Because of his character, I believe that Qiao Ran will always stay by Fang Hui’s side. Why did Chen Xun compete with Qiao Ran to get Fang Hui? He ruined the chance of Fang Hui obtaining happiness. He promised to give Fang Hui happiness, only to ruin it afterwards. Fang Hui once said, “I have never disturbed you. You are the one who came into my life… but why did you give up halfway?”
Actually in high school, when they were performing, Man Man insulted Fang Hui for being old-fashioned once. At that time, Chen Xun didn’t speak out to help her and it could be seen that Chen Xun had already began to look down on Fang Hui. But because Fang Hui’s good friend spoke out to help her and the school decided to make everyone wear the same clothing, this matter was forgotten by him. However, from this, it is obvious that Chen Xun is a person who is easily affected by his surroundings. Their love is based on Qiao Ran’s love for Chen Xun. When Chen Xun knew that Qiao Ran liked Fang Hui, he tried very hard to protect her. It cannot be denied also that their love was because of how young they were. They love for the sake of loving. Therefore, both of them can never walk together till the end. Has Chen Xun ever loved? He did, but it was for a short moment. It was a fragile type of love because it couldn’t withstand time. Time is so harsh that it can destroy all kinds of love. I have never hated a male lead like how I hate Chen Xun before. He tortured Fang Hui mentally, so much that it goes down to the bone. Fang Hui’s best friend, Jia Mo, once said to Chen Xun, “I’m not afraid that she loves you. I’m most afraid that she will hate you. Because when she hates you, she will still love you. When she can’t bear to hurt you, she will hurt herself.” A person like Chen Xun exists in real life. He is everywhere and that’s why I hate him. He is so real and he is so selfish. Normally, no matter how bad a male lead is, I would still anticipate for the female lead to forgive him. But in Cong Cong Na Nian, I hope that Fang Hui will never end up with him. Fang Hui can forgive him but not love him anymore. After breaking up, it is obvious that Chen Xun no longer love Fang Hui. Initially, they will still keep in contact occasionally because they are not used to days without one another. But gradually, it is a sense of guilty overflowing Chen Xun. I feel that after breaking up with Fang Hui, he doesn’t know and can’t love anyone anymore. He is tired too. To me, I think that he doesn’t love Xiao Tang too. Xiao Tang is a girl that is “new” to him. She is lively and talkative. He feels relaxed when he is with her… but that is not love. My dream ending is that Chen Xun will stay single (noooo! I’m not evil) and as for Fang Hui, I hope that 5 years later, she can find someone who can give her happiness. That person doesn’t need to love her forever, but that person must be willing to give everything in his life to her.
Thank you for the sypnosis, cloudandsea! I enjoyed reading it. How does the book end? Sad ending with CX and FH breaking up and they’re both single or open ending with CX/XT and FH/ZN? Please spoil, thanks.
Thank you very much for taking the time to post & write such a detailed review of the book in view of your looming exam:) FYI, I found two audiobooks as well as a 25 episode drama will be filmed. This is bcos this is a very popular book as I also read good ratings & comments on it. But this is so sad. Most of these coming of age books have open or sad ending like that TH’s Time Will Never Go Back & XYW’s Lost Youth. For once, someone comes to Aust to study, not US:P
Chen Xun sounds hateful & kind of have the same acronym as Chen Xiao Zheng in Lost Youth. Oh, they are both from the Chen family, did those authors have anything against that family lol? I guess most ppl have to kiss a few toads b4 finding their prince and bcos of the traumatic experience, it is the toad that left an indelible image in their heart/mind. As much as I dislike CX, he is the way he is. This kind of person will most probably won’t stay single. Since he is smart & good looking, there will always be fresh blood available to him. Maybe he’ll get married, then divorced or have an affair but a leopard can’t change its spots. My preference is for the girl to move on & find a trustworthy guy who can give her the security she craved for like Wei Wei In Lost Youth. You need not marry the one you love most but you must marry the one who love you most.
I found some goodies to share with you:)
Nice song (What is Love?) http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMTgzNzkyNjYw.html
This is how the author looks like: http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMTQ0MDQ3OTg0.html
Is this good ending? I might give it a try.
It’s a open ending. If I did not rmb wrongly, CX and FH had dinner together but both of them did not express any thoughts of getting back together. I guess both of them are like part of their youth and that’s it.
Hey peanut. You are welcome:) im a slacker actually haha. If they are really filming, I will be the first to watch. But I guess it will not have the same feeling as how I read the novel. Adapations from novel are always like that. With bbjx and na xie nian, wo men zui guo de nv hai as an exception. Still excited though!
The song in the video is nice but I expected them to make a video through cuts from other dramas. Like how there’s a video of Dong Gong (Eastern Palace) starring LSS, Hu Ge and Walllace Chung!
I interpret the open ending as a good ending. They didn’t end up together but I guess that’s the only option for them. After what they went through, their love has diminished already.
This book just got a translation to my language and i really curious about the story but i cant find anyone who review the book in my language lol (maybe bcs its a newly released). I’ve watched several first episodes of the drama adaptation but i dont really like it (the story aren’t smooth and kinda messed up but the actors&actress are so good) thats why i think i need to read the original book to proof that the story was not that bad (i believe it beforehand, bcs it’s not possible to a bad book got movie and drama adaptation). Thank you cloudandsea to sum it up for us to read and it helps me to decide whether to buy or not:)) actually i kinda shocked that chen xun did that to fang hui and how their love story ended up, but it makes me curios more about the next chapter (the 2nd book). Reading and watching it in 2024 feels like too late (?) bcs people on comment sections already talk abt it from 10 years ago (╥﹏╥) hahahah. Anyway thank you again!
