Faithful to Buddha, Faithful to You 不负如来不负卿 by 小春 Xiao Chun (HE)

In order to verify history, Aiqing became a lab rat and repeatedly traveled through time and space in a time machine. Fate led her to meet a famous ancient monk. Standing between them wasn’t just the distance of thousands of years, but also chaos and war, and his pious heart to Buddha.

She was his friend and teacher in their youth, their affection tender and warm. Together, they went through hardship as adults and kept a smile for each other in their old age. “For example, lotuses do not grow on dry land, but they grow in wet mud.” He suffered unfortunate ups and downs. He weathered wind and frost. He became a revered reverend. But could he hold onto his life’s greatest love?

Beyond the earthly realm were Buddha and the Dharma. In the earthly realm were feelings of love. Camel bells rang the song of the West. One thousand and six hundred years ago, a pure love took its journey along the Silk Road. How to be faithful to both Buddha and love…

Ashamed that my feelings have dirtied the holy path,
I remained afraid of the alluring beauty after I entered the mountain.
How do I fulfill both?
So that I may stay faithful to Buddha, and to you?

  • I am actually considering translating this novel into English. Unfortunately this will have to be from the Vietnamese version that I read since I don't know Chinese itself. Added to that, it's a (heavily) historical novel, even attempting to translate it entirely and striving for accuracy would be impossible. At most I can only attempt to translate important chapters and do summaries for the other ones. Nevertheless, I love this novel so much that I wish for the English-speaking community to read it too. So I am definitely going to attempt the translation before this year ends.

  • If you pick it up, do come back and let us know the link!
I contemplated translating this novel myself, and did Chapter 32 as a test. Even in that chapter which was focused on Aiqing and Rajiva, I was struggling with ethnic names that are not Chinese... like so freaking much. I don't believe I would be much help but I'd be glad to help with little tidbits.

  • It seems like there's a second book to the series. Probably a separate story, but does anyone know what it's about? Google translate tells me something along the line of Kublai Khan?

  • The 2nd book is called Blue Lotus, I think. It's more xianxia than historical, bcoz there is a fox spirit who fell in love with a monk. Most ppl don't like it as much.

  • OMG I love this novel. So angsty and yet sweet at the same time. I couldn't wait for the translation and used google translate. It was worth it!
