Refusing to Serve Me? Then Off With Your Head! 不侍寝?砍了by 蓝艾草 Lan Ai Cao (HE)

1207510

Someone said: “My bed, it’s not your first time sleeping here.  Why aren’t you coming over?”

Me: “Your majesty, this wanted fugitive is not a concubine in your palace.  I’m not obligated to sleep with you!”

… Makes no sense the concubines are left idle, instead wanting a criminal awaiting execution like me to waste energy both mentally and physically.

Someone said: “Really? – – An Yi is surprisingly very righteous!”

Not lightly nor heavily, he lets out a decree: “If you don’t want to sleep with me, then off with your head!”

This is one of my favorites, mainly because the king’s love for An Yi is very touching. Hope you guys like it!! It’s a happy ending.

The title in English sounds a bit awkward. If you guys think of something else, please let me know. Also, hope I got the female lead’s name correct.

An Yi certainly sounds entertaining, like one of those sarcastic voices in your head. I think I’ll try this when I finish the book I’m reading. But what is a criminal doing in the Emperor’s palace in the first place?

If she’s a death row criminal, won’t she be beheaded regardless of whether or not she sleeps with him?

The story begins with An Yi caught by guards from the palace sent out by the king just to look for her. She’s then brought to the capital. The intro of the book is the conversation between the king and her when they see each other again.

AY and the king have a complicated relationship. AY acts like a blockhead and like she doesn’t have a care in the world, but she’s actually quite smart. She knows the king will never kill her so she figures her best chance of having a decent life is to turn herself in, lol.

I’ve been stalking!! stalking!! Xin Yi Wu’s Viet facebook page. The translator for her books said that the title of the new book has been changed to “Never Letting Go.” OMG! That sounds so good~ Or I’m going crazy because I want to read it so much I’m imagining things. The translator also said JN will appear as a side character. I hope it’s about her married life with HS. I want JN to have a good life because she has been through so much. I need good closure, lol. Pls don’t leave me hanging, author Xin.

Actually, I’m not of age to vote yet. And even if I were, I probably wouldn’t since New York would almost definitely go to Obama anyway. I was reading 乱世太子妃, but then lidge posted this book, and I couldn’t resist looking at a couple of chapters. Thus, my original book went on hold, and I’m reading this one. So far I can’t tell if An Yi is really this oblivious or if she’s faking it. I really want to know what happened in the past.

hehe I guess I’m Republican. I like things being traditional so I voted Romney. They said our state was a swing state, but the results don’t exactly show that. Historically we’re a Democratic State. When the popularity votes has this much of a gap makes me wonder if voting is really necessary if I’m not voting what the majority is doing.

I think that usually when we start wondering if a character is actually smarter than we are lead on than likely they hides a smarter self behind their facade. Those are pretty fun to read.

Just curious, is this an internet novel or a published book?

Hey Lidge, I am back:P Started on this book to support you, lol. But I am lost:( The 1st chapter is abt Ah Huang (yellow) stealing a chicken leg? Who is Ah Huang? The girl has been on the run for 3 yrs? My Mandarin is bad especially with ancient books so if you got time give me a more detailed summary & character intro to help me understand better. The feedback is the book is funny yet sad but with a bad title. I agreed. Why the title sound like a porno book, haha?

Btw, I started to read a paragraph of Xin Yi Wu’s new book but stopped bcos I read many comments abt the long wait for the next chapter is killing them. Thus I gonna wait till abt half or more of the book has been released b4 I start or else I’ll become a stalker checking for update daily, heehee..

Yes, the first few chaps are confusing. I discovered this through rave reviews. Truth is I dropped this several times because of the first few chaps. Finally, I forced myself to read it because of the positive reviews. The story picks up when AY meets the king (male lead). In the end, I am glad I gave this a chance because it’s one of my faves. One of the reasons I like this a lot is because the story is revealed piece by piece like a puzzle.

I used an online converter for the female lead’s name so hopefully I got it right and the female lead is An Yi, lol. If not, pls let me know.

I’m skimming through and recapping so everything happens in this order in the story:

Glad you’re back, peanuts. Yes, waiting is torture so I understand if you don’t continue. The last time I waited was when I followed the drama Fated To Love You, which aired one ep per week on Sunday. Halfway through, I had to stop watching because I literally went nuts since waiting for 1 ep each week was just too much torture, lol.

Found out that some ppl thinks the love b/w the emperor & the girl is like fatherly love because her dad is a strong influence in her life. EEeeeee, I get goosebumps, lol. Also, some ship the 2nd male lead bcos the girl didn’t tell him she is a girl disguised as a man so it is unfair to him. Whereas the emperor knows since he saw her undress. Don’t know if I can continue with the book since I don’t have a good opinion of the king now:P

Yes, am marathoning dramas and books, lol. Just finished H&L and enjoyed it. Kate did well, especially in scenes after her brother’s death where tears just silently rolled down her eyes. I thought she was really good!

I admit AY’s father’s love for her and the king’s love are two things that stand out in this book, but I don’t think the latter is a form of parental love. There are some similarities: They both love AY, want the best for her, can sacrifice for her. The intentions are the same, but the difference I see is “tough love” vs. “indulgent love.”

In the case of AY’s father, I think it’s “indulgent love” disguised as “tough love.” AY’s father dresses her and treats her like a boy, hits her playfully so she can learn to hit back, lets her run wild and doesn’t try to rein her in, allows her to eat with rude table manners just as long as she eats something, etc. AY’s relationship with her father is very touching, but I don’t agree with his method of dealing with her. It’s not truly “tough love” but “indulgent love,” just plain bad parenting of spoiling an only child rotten. Thus AY grows up with a lot of strange ideas and behaves a bit off. She acts like a spoiled big kid who can’t deal with things. For example, her father vomits blood and dies. Instead of trying to investigate, she jumps to the wrong conclusion that it’s her fault. She can’t deal with it so runs off to join the army and gets herself almost killed.

Interestingly, the king’s love is the opposite. It’s “tough love” disguised as “indulgent love.” The king spoils AY by letting her stay in his place, assigning special bodyguards for her, siding with her against his concubines, constantly feeding AY her favorite foods, lol. But the difference between the king and AY’s father is that the king will draw the line if necessary so in the end, he helps her grow as a human being. An example is one of my favorite parts in the book where AY burns herself and AH. The king rides up and threatens to shoot her if she doesn’t jump out. When she doesn’t, he does shoot an arrow her way, but just as a warning, not to harm her. There’s also another part that I absolutely love. It’s after AY finds out her father died due to being poisoned, not because of her making him mad. The king then takes her to her old house and constantly tells her “cry for me” until she actually does. He knew she needed to let go of the past and forgive herself, and her crying would hurt him because he loves her so much. In the end, he still forces her to cry because she needed to process her emotions. The king is not afraid to push AY in the direction she needs to go. Sometimes he does it with harsh words, sometimes with soft words. I think this is the type of love that’s beneficial for AY and helps her grow up. The king will side with AY if she’s in the right, but he doesn’t indulge her crazy ways. Instead, he supports her, helps her, guides her.

I am not a fan of the 2nd male lead. I do feel bad that he didn’t know AY was a girl so the king had an advantage, but I can’t support the 2nd male lead because he is a weak person. Take for example when the male lead wages war against AH. When the tides turn and defeat seems imminent, the 2nd male lead and his father defect to the side of the male lead. AY, on the other hand, does everything possible to help AH escape. She becomes a fugitive and goes on the run with AH even knowing it would be difficult since AH is such a blockhead, lol.

AH, AY & 2nd male lead grew up together. AY’s father & 2nd male lead’s father were important officials but lead opposite political factions. AY had a huge crush on the 2nd male lead from the time she was a child so she did a lot of silly things to get his notice and affections. Problem is everyone in the capital knew her as a boy so they thought she was gay, lol.

Throughout the book, we never get a description of AY’s looks. It’s only in the epilogue from the 2nd male lead’s pt of view when he first sees AY dressed as a girl that we find out she’s beautiful.

There was a time I wanted to be a critic, not a literary or movie critic but a food critic. Nothing better than making a living by getting to eat good food for free every day, lol.

You know me and my gay fetish, haha, Just kidding, but now that I think about it, some of my fave books do have gay theme, lol.

I just finished 一夜一日一年一世. It’s sad ending, but acceptable because the main couple are together in death. I like it a lot. After finishing it, I felt motivated to maybe try translating it. The story is short so I think doable. Ahhh, but now the lazy bug is back with a vengeance so I’m reconsidering it, lol.

I’m also checking out a few other books, but nothing really stands out. Just saw the trailer for Swordsman so now I want to watch the 1984 version with Chow Yun-Fat since it’s the only version I haven’t seen.

I also liked 14th Prince best in BBJX.

I like this book which is written with a lot of self- mocking humour, that has taken away a lot of the sting in an otherwise very sad life.

An Yi is a girl who is brought up as a boy which causes her to get stuck with a “gay” label when she fell in love with her childhood friend and start chasing after him. She got rejected (because childhood friend is blind), betrayed by the asshole (which indirectly causes her beloved fathers’s death) and her love died ever since. While she risk her life to protect another childhood friend, said friend is also lying to her all these while. When all is said and done, she can still laugh at herself when she is forced to “show some skin” just in order to exchange “for some food to eat”.

Because much of her story can already be guessed from the early chapters, the story got a bit boring when we flashback to what exactly happens. An Yi is a hoot, and many passages are funny. The love story between her and Feng Zhao Wen (His Majesty) is all the more sweet because she really deserves a good man.

    A 3.5 stars from me.
